Abstract:
Handloom forms a precious part of the generational legacy and exemplifies the richness and diversity of culture and
artistry of the weavers. Tradition of weaving by hand is a part of the country’s cultural ethos. However, in the present
context of globalization and rapid technological changes, handloom sector is beset with many challenges and the handloom
products are being continuously replicated on power looms at much lower price. Hence, there is a need to strengthen this
sector given the employment potential and market demand for handloom products. On the other hand environmental
considerations are now becoming additional important factors during the selection of consumer goods including textiles all
over the world. Affairs related to environmental preservation and control of pollution have renewed interest for use of
natural dyes for the colouration of textile materials all over the world, particularly in the developed countries. In the past few
decades, batik work on textile materials has gained popularity among the young generations who quickly adapted the
easy-to-do method for individualizing their shirts, trousers, jeans and casual clothing. Therefore, product diversification
through batik work with natural dyes is one of the ways to create fancy effect on the handloom products for the ever
changing fashion market. A greater emphasis on using natural dye in the textile industry could make a valuable contribution
to environmental sustainability in the 21st century.
